Flood Grungies.

During 1990 Charleville experienced a massive flood. In just a few days exceptionally heavy rain in the town itself, in areas upstream, and at the same time in areas downstream caused the waters to backup in the Warrego River and Bradleys Gully. Much of the town was submersed below the waters when these streams rose rapidly. Nearly everyone was evacuated to the airport then to places throughout Queensland. A huge temporary village was setup at the airport while the people waited for the waters to subside. As the waters subsided teams of volunteers from all over queensland converged on the town to begin the mammoth task of rebuilding. Replacement houses were trucked in from other centres in the state while the remaining homes were cleaned of tons of mud and wrecked possessions. The water level markers can still be seen in various locations in town. One site is on the wall in the front room at the Historic House Museum.

Two local people, Michelle Sheehan a local writer, and Donna Reynolds a wellknown local artist, prepared a wonderful book for both children and adults to commemorate the event.

This beautiful book is still available from;
Charleville Newsagency, Alfred Street, Charleville.
and Historic House Museum, Charleville.
