Lest We Forget Memorial Display
Part One

During the "visitors season" tourists are welcome to browse a representative display of
War Memorabilia – books, photos, medals etc. at 6 Alfred St Charleville Qld

Whose Memorabilia?
This project started out to be a public display in the Warrego Club prior to Anzac Day 2003. It was envisaged that the display would continue there until the summer of 2003-2004 when it would return to its home at 6 Alfred St Charleville.

Items are taken from the collection of VX37329 BDR R.H.G. Jelley (“Tich”), 4th Anti Tank Regt, 8th Division. A.I.F. These comprise medals, photographs, maps, articles, stories and original poems relating to the construction by Prisoners of War of the infamous Burma Siam Railway.

Other exhibits encompass representative material from the RAN, AIF, RAAF including currently serving members of the Australian Military Forces.

The items on display represent only a very small fraction of what is held locally.

The Objective
To establish a permanent Lest We Forget Memorial Display & Educational Centre in Charleville.

What is currently on display?
Due to the space constraint the current display is a representative sample of the items that reside locally. When a permanent "home" is found then the exhibition will be several times its current size.
There is sufficient material now on display to occupy a visitor for an hour or so browsing, reading, questioning and listening to stories.
There is a quiet comfortable place to sit outside on the verandah overlooking the paddocks leading down to the Warrego River. This green pasture of untamed grass is a wild and lovely play space to children and animals alike. The calls of the birds, the laughter of children romping and running accompanied by their ever faithful dogs, sometimes goats, and often mates riding ponies bareback is a wake up call to the truly important things of life.
