STORIES ABOUT CHARLEVILLE AIR BASE
JAPANESE BOMBERS OVER CHARLEVILLE

Dorothy Brooks lived at Cooladdi (100 kms west of Charleville).
In 1943 she heard a roaring noise, raced outside to see 3 Japanese Bombers flying south.  She thought this was the end of Australia.
They were looking for Charleville Air Base. If they had just gone bit east they would have found it!!
Their aircraft had long-range tanks but not enough to get them home again so they were obviously “suicide bombers”.

NAVIGATING BETWEEN CHARLEVILLE AND DARWIN

Every 200 miles there is a stone pitched arrow placed on the ground between Darwin and Charleville.  These were put there so that planes could keep radio silence in flight.

SPIES

Three spies were caught in Charleville. They had radio transmitters. One was caught at the nine-mile dam.
